| If we use an Internet analogy, the digestive system
is like a portal for nutrients. When we take food into the body,
a tube running from mouth to south acts as an assembly line
for digestion. The basic function of the digestive system is
to break down macromolecules (proteins, fats and starch), into
smaller molecules (amino acids, fatty acids and glucose). Once
broken down they can be absorbed through the wall of the digestive
tube and carried throughout the body. |

Indigestion
Heartburn, nausea and a queasy stomach are all characteristic of
indigestion. Basically, it means your body is having difficulty
passing food into the intestine.
Heartburn occurs when the contents of the upper digestive tract
back up through the little "door" between the esophagus
and the stomach. You might know it as reflux. Antacids can help
remedy the problem, but are not advised over long periods.
Tips to Prevent Heartburn!
- Examine your diet - Avoid foods such caffeine, chocolate, citrus
and tomato. And don't believe the hype about soft-drinks relieving
reflux - it's a myth.
- Quit smoking - Tobacco irritates the digestive tract and contributes
to heartburn.
- Avoid alcohol - It can cause and exacerbate indigestion.
- Eat smaller meals - More frequent meals can help prevent heartburn.
- Reduce stress - Stress doesn't cause gastro-esophageal reflux
disease, but it can make it worse. Try massage, yoga and aromatherapy.
A new study suggests shift workers and frequent fliers may suffer
from indigestion because their inner clocks can't keep up with
their sleep schedules.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of disorders, including
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, that attack the gut and cause
progressive inflammation and destruction of different parts of the
intestines. Researchers now believe stress can exacerbate the flare-ups
of IBD. The elimination of dairy products and fat-rich foods can
help
sufferers.
